The Legacy Gallery

Since the inception of the Legacy Gallery space at the Owen Sound Artists’ Co-op in 2011, we have hosted many diverse and outstanding exhibits. The gallery was originally rented in the Chicago Building with the help of a generous Trillium Grant, successfully written by Caroline Menzies and Kate McLaren. This four year grant pushed forward the promotion of emerging youth artists in Grey and Bruce. I took over the grant management at the end of 2012, and continued the good work started by Caroline and Kate. The Legacy Gallery showed youth community projects often highlighting troubling issues, including drug and alcohol abuse and intolerance. An oft-changing group of youths, dubbed “Next Generation”, exhibited a vast array of mediums several months a year. With private funding, we continue my personal favorite, “Art and Craft Legacy Show”, highlighting the amazing talents of our high school students in a yearly juried display. Sadly, once the Trillium funds were finished, most programs ended, but we have continued our commitment to the high school students with our yearly exhibit, and look forward to some future youth projects in our new location!

The Legacy Gallery is now available for rent. Every month unveils a new exhibit. Sometimes a solo show, sometimes a group show (which spreads the fee), sometimes with members’ work, sometimes without. In the five years we have maintained this space, we have had jewellery, sculpture, photography, acrylics, oils, watercolour, encaustic, pottery, words and even a book launch. The space is available for $600 per month, plus 25% of sales. Applications are available at the front desk or online.

This month, we are delighted and proud to unveil something completely fresh! “Draw Your Own Conclusions” is an exhibition of hundreds of small drawings created by Grey County artists Kate Civiero and Becky Comber. Kate and Becky use pen, pencil, gouache, watercolour and paper to make up the eclectic, humorous, and captivating collection. Zany and offbeat, the sheer volume and diversity of the works is used in effect to not only fill the exhibition space in a fun and inspiring collection but to also embody a spirit of whimsical and skillfully rendered imagery towards a mutual goal: celebrate drawing.

Come and meet Kate and Becky at their opening on Friday, September 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Their work will be on display until the end of September.

We will be celebrating 4 guest artists this month. Accomplished rug hooker Micheline Howitt will be exhibiting her wares, as well as Will Krisza with surreal canvases created with acrylic and spray paint. Kate Civiero will be wearing two hats this month, as an illustrator in the Legacy Gallery, and as a glassblower with our guest artists….she has been very busy. And Kate’s talented mother, Wendy Bachiu will honour us with her abstract images in cold wax and oil.

We are now open 7 days a week!
